Cycling around Europe

Over the last 18 years I have cycled thousands of kilometres all over Europe. But, I have never really documented them, let alone kept much of a track of them, other than taking lots of photos that quickly become buried by even more. In order to stop one tour from into blurring into another, I thought I would finally jot a few things down, more as an aide-mémoire rather than any vanity project. These notes will include experiences that have been good, bad and downright difficult. I shall also endeavour to provide some information on a few bits of kit that I feel are worth mentioning.

I am pretty experienced at cycle touring and I have cycled thousands of kilometres through the U.K., France, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Czechia, Slovakia and Hungary. It’s easy to forget that Europe is amazing in its geographical variety and its relative ease through which to cycle. I encourage others to explore it as well – it’s a beautiful continent.

While I will not dredge up nearly two decades worth of cycling trips, I will try to start a travelogue starting with my current one, which started in June 2026.

Lastly, it is worth mentioning that this blog is mostly for my consumption, as well as that for family and friends, whom may be interested. But I am also happy for anyone else to follow the geographical and verbal meanderings of my trips. I don’t claim to be a wordsmith, and it’s unlikely that I will be writing any kind of Booker Prize-winning masterpiece any time soon, but I hope you will enjoy it, regardless!
